Preparation

This unit will focus on Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). As VPNs can be applied using a wide set of technologies and protocols, we do not expect you to have a full understanding of all VPN deployment types. We will instead focus on some generalities of VPN deployments, both hierarchical and technologically. The initial reading material listed is expected preparatory work before the lecture and will be the basis for the RAT. Finally, we include some optional reading material.

Reading material

Book Chapter:

As preparation for the MPLS unit, read chapter 4.4 of the Systems Approach "Computer Networks" book:

Computer Networks: A Systems Approach

Blog Post:

The following blog post gives an introduction to VRFs:

Optional Reading Material

RFC

The RFC 4364 for BGP/MPLS IP Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) gives solid prefacing in understanding the context for this type of VPN. This VPN is also the basis for the MPLS-lab and can give an understanding of how (conceptually) to solve the lab.
