Labs

This page will provide links to the different lab tasks, as well as some general information regarding the labs. More information will be available when the lab tasks are ready.

Prerequisites for labs

The labs are either based on working from a provided virtual machine image, or more commonly, by utilizing GNS3 as an environment for interacting with a virtual network. For the lab-tasks, each group will be provided a GNS3-server, hosted by NTNU. The server can be interacted with by interfacing a GNS3-client on your own computer (or the Sahara computers). The instructions on how to set up GNS3 can be found in the Wiki.

Submission details

Please submit an archive (.tar.gz or .zip) containing a single directory with all the files you want to submit. Include your group number in both the file name and the directory name. Submission is done via Canvas, with one attempt per group.

Required Report

A report is mandatory: one single PDF file, named worksheet(num)-group(num).pdf, containing the following elements:

  • Your group number on the first page.
  • For each question, the written answers together with the relevant portions of output from all commands in text format. Screenshots of terminal windows are accepted, but keep these to a minimum and include only necessary pictures. For ping, 3–4 lines of ping requests is sufficient.
  • For each question, all changed parts in the configuration of routers and hosts (i.e. the differences from the default config).
  • Never include the full verbatim switch or router configuration in the PDF report.
  • For all questions, state your assumptions, say what you did, describe what you observed, and explain your conclusions.

Additional Files

  • Deliver an export of your completed project (from GNS3) as part of the submission. Be patient when exporting the project file and uploading it to Canvas, don't interrupt the upload. It takes some time, but tends to work out in the end.
  • Include any scripts you used to collect or plot data in the archive.
  • For each question where you edited the default configurations, provide the full router configurations in a separate text file named after the device and question, e.g. q01-config-R1.txt. This makes it easier for us to reproduce your configuration and understand what you did.
  • Preferably, provide the full configurations using the VyOS commands format:

Note: We can only grade what we find in your submission and what we understand. Please state your assumptions and observations as clearly as possible.
